The lunar calendar is a lunisolar calendar based on the cycles of the moon. Each lunar month begins on the day of the new moon and lasts 29 or 30 days. A regular lunar year has 12 months (about 354 days), which is shorter than a solar year. To keep the calendar aligned with the seasons, a leap month (intercalary month) is added approximately every 3 years. The Sexagenary Cycle combines 10 Heavenly Stems with 12 Earthly Branches to create a 60-year cycle, while the 12 zodiac animals repeat every 12 years.
